Designing with Depth: A Conversation with Vanessa Frylinck of oLivespace
Vanessa Frylinck
We had the pleasure of speaking with interior designer Vanessa Frylinck, founder of oLivespace, for an inspiring conversation about her creative journey, design philosophy, and the stories behind the spaces she transforms. With a career that began in IT and evolved through a deep-rooted passion for interiors—sparked by her stepmother’s design studio—Vanessa brings a unique blend of technical precision and artistic flair to her work.
Through oLivespace, Vanessa has become known for her ability to balance bold statements with thoughtful restraint, crafting interiors that reflect her clients’ personalities while subtly weaving in her signature style. From textured wall finishes to biophilic elements and heritage-inspired palettes, her work tells a story—layered, personal, and deeply connected.
In this conversation, Vanessa shares what drives her creativity, how she approaches design challenges, and what sets oLivespace apart in the world of interiors.
What drew you to the world of interior design, and how did your experience with that first accent wall influence your creative direction?
Growing up, I was influenced by my stepmother’s passion for interior design. Her bespoke store, The Mustard Seed, showcased her unique style. As I assisted her and observed her work, my own interest in design grew. After a successful IT career, I transitioned to interior design, driven by a passion for transforming personal spaces.
You describe your passion as “transformation, bold or modest.” How do you decide when to go bold and when to embrace restraint?
As an interior designer, I believe that understanding each client’s unique personality, lifestyle, and preferences is essential. By listening attentively, I tailor my approach to suit their style, balancing creativity with practicality, and bring their vision to life with expert insight and innovative ideas.
What does the name “oLivespace” mean to you, and how does it reflect your vision as a designer?
The name O’Livespace originated from my favourite tree, the olive, which I felt captured the essence of my brand—growth. However, due to technical limitations with apostrophes on social media platforms, the name evolved into oLivespace.
How do you approach designing a space that reflects your client’s personality while still incorporating your signature style?
I work closely with my clients to develop a design concept that reflects their personality and style. I subtly weave in my signature through thoughtful material choices, clever spatial planning, and curated decorative elements. I strive to achieve a harmonious balance between the client’s personality and my design expertise, ensuring the space feels both personal and professionally designed.
You’ve worked with a variety of wall coverings, including Pandomo finishes. What excites you most about using texture and surface in your designs?
Oh wow. The vast array of wall finishes is truly remarkable! From specialized techniques such as Pandomo paint effects and concrete screed applications to innovative solutions like granite paints and fabric wall décor—the list is endless. A focus wall in a bedroom or a textured wall enhances the overall design narrative, adding depth and visual interest. The strategic use of texture not only creates a captivating aesthetic but also guides the eye through the room, elevating the overall space.
How important is storytelling in your interior design work, and how do you use elements like wallpaper and wall art to bring that story to life?
Every individual has their own story and style. By incorporating elements that hold personal significance, I can create spaces that not only look beautiful but also tell a story. I love bringing those personalities to life with bright, vibrant wall designs or more neutral, textured applications. By selecting wallpaper and wall art that resonate with the client’s interests, hobbies, or values, I create a space that feels truly personal.
You’re known for combining contemporary and classic elements. How do you strike that balance in a space without it feeling too busy or conflicting?
I strike a balance between contemporary and classic elements by blending timeless pieces with modern sensibilities. I achieve this harmony by selecting classic pieces that provide a sense of heritage and pairing them with contemporary ones that add a touch of freshness. By thoughtfully combining textures, colours, and patterns, I create a cohesive space that feels both elegant and current. The key is finding a common thread that ties the different elements together—whether it’s a shared colour palette, material, or design motif—so the space feels curated and intentional rather than busy or conflicting.
What advice would you give to someone nervous about using bold wallpaper or dramatic wall art in their home?
Many clients initially express hesitation, having been conditioned to favour neutral colours as a safe option. However, by showcasing innovative wall designs that incorporate biophilic elements, I’ve encouraged clients to step out of their comfort zones and explore new possibilities. Biophilic design, which integrates natural elements like plants, natural materials, and abundant natural light, creates a profound sense of connection to the outdoors. And wallpaper can certainly achieve this! One of my clients remarked that their guest toilet—featuring a nature-inspired design—feels like a peaceful jungle retreat. Also, because our wallpaper is completely removable without damaging the wall, and 100% reusable, it’s a much safer option than paint or other applications.
Are there any design trends or movements that you’re especially excited about right now?
Colour drenching has made a remarkable comeback, though clients do express hesitation, as it can be rather dramatic. Muted pastels are also returning, often paired with striking accent colours that create stunning contrast. Bold colours and eclectic design paired with heritage items are re-emerging. My absolute favourite, however, is the prioritization of eco-friendly materials and linens.
What sets oLivespace apart from other design studios, and what can clients expect when they work with you?
I’m proud to say that what sets us apart is our unique blend of creativity, expertise, and a personalized approach. A commitment to quality. Individually crafted solutions. This is all blended with open communication, flexibility, and timeless design. When clients work with oLivespace, they can expect a seamless and enjoyable design experience, from initial consultation to project completion.
Can you share a memorable client project where your vision truly came to life?
Yes, a project based on a Japanese theme, inspired by artwork a client received as a young lady from her aunt. Swords and scrolls included, we designed around the artwork’s colour palette: mahogany, burgundy, butter yellow, and pale blue accents. The wallpaper featured Japanese bamboo motifs on a pale blue background in the lounge, which complemented the bold blue kitchen and unified the open-plan space beautifully. We chose muted grey furniture to balance the bold colours. The result was a peaceful, cozy home—and a very satisfied client!
How do you hope clients feel when they walk into a space you’ve designed for them?
As an interior designer, my ultimate goal is to create spaces that evoke a range of positive emotions and sensations. When clients walk into a space I’ve designed, I hope they feel comfortable, inspired, refreshed, and connected to it. They should feel proud to call the space their own, with a strong sense of ownership and joy.
