Spaces That Breathe: Bendehuis and the Art of Mindful Architecture
As the return to office grows after recent years favouring work-from-home settings, the modern office must now compete with the comfort of home. Spaces that embrace natural light, sustainable materials, and calming design cues help employees transition smoothly. It’s this philosophy of mindful architecture that lies at the heart of Bendehuis, a landmark new office space in Pretoria’s Old East Precinct. Be Inspired with Klay
Where Craft Meets Conscious Design
Bendehuis stands as a bold new chapter in South African architecture. Developed in collaboration with Atterbury Property, Slee+Co Architects, and Archecon Construction, Bendehuis reimagines the traditional workplace. One of its most striking features: over 15 000 Klay Mirage Quad screen blocks, or breeze blocks, making up its unique façade. It is one of the largest showcases of screen block design in South Africa, and a proud demonstration of the scale and artistry possible with Klay.
The screen block exterior allows for filtered natural light through the lattice structure, casting subtle shifts of shadow and light during the day and reducing the need for additional lighting and cooling as we move into summer.
The Colour of Human-Centred Design
Reminiscent of sun-baked landscapes, Klay’s signature Chai colour infuses warmth throughout and perfectly sets the tone for the start of Spring. In a time when employees are seeking workplaces that feel more human and less mechanical, the warmth of terracotta and natural materials become part of the wellbeing experience. This combination forms a space that feels grounded and embraces mindful living.
Bendehuis demonstrates how thoughtful design can create spaces that inspire and sustain those who inhabit them and Klay’s screen block façade is an integral part of the building’s character and functionality. Their earthy tones and textured patterns shape the rhythm of the space, creating a calming atmosphere that supports both focus and wellbeing. By merging craftsmanship and design ambition, Klay’s screen blocks turn Bendehuis into a space that truly breathes.
