Extraordinary mid-century home in Palm Springs
Inspired by the swinging 60s, designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard turned a mid-century home in Palm Springs, once home to a James Bond and a legendary playboy, into a contemporary abode infused with colour and fun.
From the pops of cerise pink seating both inside and out to the neon green palm-frond wallpaper and other green accents in the bedrooms, the interior sings in bright accords.
“I designed the home with a ‘swinging 60s rat pack’ vibe that captures the essence of the period in which the house was built,” explains Martyn, adding that the property’s status as a listed historical and cultural monument meant an extensive remodel was out of the question.
“I undertook an 18-month renovation that incorporated a new kitchen, screening room and guest suite. The master bathroom had to be reconfigured as it had been a movie star-scaled closet with a fur closet and vault that we certainly did not need. That was all reworked to make a new master ensuite with a dressing room.”
That means that the original architecture of the home, designed by James McNaughton in 1962 for a Hollywood producer and his family can still be seen throughout, including the colonnade that flows from inside to out, creating a unique link between the interior and the exterior.
Bullard carefully plied his trade atop this perfect example of Hollywood regency architecture, adding pizzazz and character through the addition of designer pieces, graphic prints and patterns and vibrant hues, giving it as much of a feature role as it deserves.
