The Cape Gallery: Returning the Gaze
Returning The Gaze is a selection of portraits by local artists on view from 6 – 28 June 2019 at The Cape Gallery.
This exhibition is a collection of portraits, not constrained by the need to depict, record or empower, but a compulsion to be captured or capture another, a moment their essence,
their kinship or their beauty. A celebration of people!
“We ask you to cast a backward gaze, recognize some of the personalities portrayed, to reflect and recollect upon those who have influenced our lives. Ordinary people, icons or muses; portraits commemorate those who have broken the mould, set a trend, provoke us or embody personalities and can move us to view the world another way.”
It takes skill from a perceptive artist to achieve a human likeness in in animate matter and capture the imagination of the onlooker. The Illusion of vitality invested in a portrait defies change or decay, any expression of emotion is transfixed in time.In recognising the identity and the relevance a portrait there has to be a personal response. The disposition of the viewer, their aspirations, culture, and religion, political or historical orientation will be engaged and contribute to the manner in which a portrait is viewed.
