Mud Studio
New, neutral and now: the latest from MUD Studio.
Based in Port Alfred, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, MUD Studio has been synonymous with ceramic decor since owners Philippa and Werner Du Toit shaped the first clay bead chandelier 18 years ago.
Born out of a need to help the local community through job creation, MUD Studio drew on the resources and cultural heritage of the area to inspire and create their unique clay light fittings that, today, are sought the world over.
As UK interior designer Kit Kemp notes “What I admire is that the design starts from a village community and becomes something desirable worldwide”.
MUD Studio’s latest products include several striking chandeliers in bone-white ceramic. There’s the Messy pillar light constructed out of long, slim tendrils of ceramic reminiscent of acacia pods. The Beaded Pebble chandeliers that delicately fuse traditional African craft with a strong sense of French Provencal nostalgia and larger layered and tapered statement chandeliers constructed from hundreds of pieces of fine ceramic pieces affixed to one another.
Akin to works of art, these lights are decidedly new and now. From the monochromatic neutral colour scheme and the focus on the unique and the handmade to the use of clay – there’s nothing about the latest offering from MUD Studio that is not perfectly on-trend.
These functional pieces are as at home in a contemporary or Bushveld home as they are in a beach house, penthouse apartment, hotel, resort or even a designer retail space.
MUD Studio also manufactures bespoke furniture and stoneware dinnerware.
