Modern Gesture crafts truly unique pieces
Believing that a story is embedded in each piece they create, capturing the time and care engaged in the creation of the item, Modern Gesture crafts truly unique pieces that tell a personal story.
“Throughout the process, there is a constant conversation happening between the hand of the designer and the material being formed,” says Modern Gesture. “Each product is designed to engage our attention and draw us into a space to encounter sensory experiences. This conversation leads to a deepening of oneself and a more personal engagement with the material and its final design, allowing for a new approach to quality, innovative design and simplicity, but still holds an international appeal without losing its local relevance and sentiments.”
Here, they share the stories behind some of their most striking designs.
“The African Woven Necklace Pendant was inspired by African beaded necklaces. African jewellery is known for its beauty and quality, as well as the layering in the beadwork. As the lamp embodies an African necklace shape through the use of wooden rings, a representation of wholeness and timelessness. Each layer of the lampshade is adjustable to any required angle, and when all layers are aligned, it can be easily flat-packed for storage and packaging purposes. The lampshades are coated with a water-based varnish and are eco-friendly”
“This African-inspired wall lamp is the perfect accessory for adding the right amount of beauty and light to any interior, whether it is your home, restaurant or hotel. This Weaver Wall Sconce is the perfect combination of artistry, practicality and elegance. It is the ultimate design for any interior that not only adds an inspiring wall light to your room but also highlights African beauty and craftsmanship. The Weaver Wall Sconce is made from off-cut recycled birch wood. Weaver wall sconces are made from birch wood, wrapped in teal or black wax cord, with a 100mm wall mount and light bulb E27 screw-in. This beautifully crafted, African-inspired piece is the perfect accessory for any interior. Whether you are beginning your exploration into contemporary African design or have been a long-time collector.”
“The Tribal Necklace Pendant was inspired by African beaded necklaces. I used structural elements to design this pendant. African jewellery is known for its beauty and quality, as well as the layering in the beadwork. As the lamp embodies an African necklace shape through the use of wooden rings, a representation of wholeness and timelessness. Each layer of the lampshade is adjustable to any required angle, and when all layers are aligned, it can be easily flat-packed for storage and packaging purposes.”
“This Sustainably-focused handmade mirror is the perfect blend between sharp lines and gentle curves. This innovative design features an 800mm off-cut wooden frame, available in either natural or bold black colouring. Each frame is fitted with a 400mm mirror and a beautiful woven covering that not only adds contrast to the frame but compliments it so well.”
“Masterfully crafted, this tribal-inspired wall mirror beautifully merges functionality with artistry. Made from birchwood, the beautifully crafted pieces are available in two colours: Natural and Black.”
