India Ink: Exotic Kanthas, Kilims, Quilts and More
Beautifully crafted textiles are a staple in the home. Use a striking throw over your bed or a handcrafted rug to adorn the floors. Either way, the generations of craftsmanship and handcrafted nature of many Indian textiles make these items sort after, unique and authentic.
Kanthas:
We love the textural handcrafted designs of an original, handcrafted Kantha. But what exactly is it? Well, a Kantha, translated into “patched cloth” refers to both the tradition of producing these unique, quilted blankets (making something useful and beautiful out of discarded items), as well as the craft and stitch itself (a small, straight running stitch in Bengali embroidery).
The Kantha is native to eastern South Asia, in particular Bangladesh and neighbouring Indian states. It often features bright colours stitched together layer upon layer of old saris and tossed-aside cloth scraps that create these beautifully thin throws used as blankets and cushions. They often feature different patterns on each side, so you can change things up and use them as a double-sided throw or blanket in your home.
Kilims:
A kilim is another fantastic handcrafted item that originates mostly from the countries located in the former Persian Empire – Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkic countries of Central Asia. A kilim is a flat tapestry-woven carpet or rug which is traditionally used as a decorative item or prayer mat in the home. In modern homes, it is also a wonderful floor covering.
We love the many textures and colours available in kilims. The flat-weaving technique used in these items make each kilim unique with handcrafted quality.
Kilims, quilts and kanthas are a wonderful textural element for any home. Kanthas are ideal as a throw on the bed, a cushion cover, draped over the couch or even used as an elaborate and unique table cloth.
