Sustainability in Action
These Mia Mélange placemats are made from 100% cotton rope, combined with jute. This is subsequently and carefully sewn together in a coiling technique. The cotton is grown locally in South Africa by farmers who are members of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). The Better Cotton Initiative is therefore a non-profit, multistakeholder governance group that promotes better standards in cotton farming and practices across 21 countries. Its mission is to thus help cotton communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment.
Today almost a quarter of the world’s cotton is produced under the Better Cotton Standard, and 2.4 million cotton farmers have been trained in sustainable farming practices and are licensed to grow Better Cotton. The vision of a sustainable world, where cotton farmers and workers know how to cope – with climate change, threats to the environment and even global pandemics – seems within reach. Furthermore, a new generation of cotton farming communities will be able to make a decent living, have a strong voice in the supply chain and meet growing consumer demand for more sustainable cotton.
