Flashy, Colourful, Glamorous: Rosenthal X Martin Schoeller
With a special twinkle in the eye: the Rosenthal X Martin Schoeller collection focuses on the glittering world of drag queens.
For the limited edition plates, Martin Schoeller artfully applied the glittering drag culture to porcelain. Six motifs in shimmering colours characterise the collection. Four of them are limited to 100 pieces each and thus already have what it takes to become a collector’s item. After all, all of the designs were created by one of the most sought-after photographers of our time. Martin Schoeller has had them all in front of the lens: Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney or Angela Merkel. He has also portrayed homeless people, drag queens and bodybuilders.
“It was a new and exciting challenge to design these plates for Rosenthal. It is an honour for me to be part of the long series of outstanding artists with whom Rosenthal has already worked,” says the Munich-born artist, who has lived in the USA since 1993. Martin Schoeller will donate his share of the proceeds from the sale of the plates to the LGBT Center in West Hollywood, which provides medical care for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The plates can also be seen from 27 February to 17 May 2020 at the NRW Forum Düsseldorf, which is dedicating the most comprehensive exhibition in Germany to date to Martin Schoeller’s work: in addition to the Close Up and Female Bodybuilders series, the exhibition presents the Drag Queens series for the first time along with new works from a series about acquitted death row inmates.
Rosenthal may have one of the longest traditions of Germany‘s companies, but is also one of the most modern. Just as we did when we were originally founded 140 years ago, Rosenthal develops products equally for discerning end customers and for exacting professional clients from the restaurant and hotel trade. Our products stand out with exceptional form, function, quality and craftsmanship and represent a cultural asset “made in Germany”, never ceasing to combine innovation and creativity. With its award-winning porcelain design, trendy lifestyle collections and modern, elegant classics, the Rosenthal brand raises the bar time and again for aesthetics and individuality.
Established figures from the worlds of architecture, design and art, but also the hottest newcomers and talents design avant-garde dinner table collections, foster a joy of giving and create sophisticated furnishings. The collections are manufactured in the Rosenthal porcelain factory in Selb and the “Thomas am Kulm” porcelain factory in Speichersdorf, which offer some of the porcelain industry‘s most advanced production facilities anywhere in the world and deliver sustainable manufacturing with careful use of resources thanks to the forward- looking investments that have been made.
New interior collections and accessories enrich the Rosenthal world by adding designer objects that go far beyond the limits of a conventional table setting and round off the huge product variety.
