Something Old, Something New at The Cape Gallery
Nostalgia and romance are the themes of the first group exhibition of 2018; a summer show of ‘collectables’ called ‘Something Old, Something New’, now on at The Cape Gallery. With works dating from 1855 – 2017, the exhibition runs from 4th to 26th January.
Time, tradition and change; cycle and re-cycle require of us a constant reassessment of what we assign value to in each unique piece of art. How we assign that value depends upon a personal journey as we identify what resonates with us, and what is recognized as being significant in a wider social context of the society in which we live. This context is in constant flux, never more so than now. ~ (Gail Dorje) The collection of watercolours, prints and oils includes: Alfred Joseph Warne Browne 1855 – 1915 Constance Penstone 1864 -1928 Edith Frances Mary Struben 1868 -1936 Leo Francis 1870 – 1938 Charles Ernest Peers 1874 Edward Arthur Roworth – 1880 – 1964 Maria Magdalena Laubser 1886 – 1973 Alfred Gordon Taylor 1891 – 1971 Ivan Mitfod Barbeton 1896 -1976 Lippy Lipschitz 1903 – 1980 Russel Harvey 1904 – 1963 Robert Broadley 1908-1988 Stefan Ampenberger 1908 – 1993 Nerine Constantia Desmond 1908 – 1993 Fred Page 1908 -1994 Joe Osser 1908 -1988 Gregoire Johannes Boonzaier 1909 – 2005 Bruce Hancock 1912 -1990 Eleanor Esmonde-White 1914 – 2007 Gabriel de Jongh 1914 – 2004 Betty Cilliers Barnard 1914 – 2010 Alexander Rose Innes 1915 – 1996 Erica Berry 1916 – 2006 Piet van Heerden 1917 – 1991 Lucy Wiles 1918 – 2008 Alice Goldin 1922-2016 Tita Fasciotti 1927 – 1993 Peter Clarke 1929 -2014 Maureen Langley 1934 – John Smith 1944 – Rachelle Bomberg 1950 – Lambert Kriedeman 1951 – Pieter Uitlander 1952 – Hilary Iwanski 1955 – Roelof Rossouw 1957 – Jill Colley current Niel Jonker 1971 – Robert Koch 1971 – Source: The Cape Gallery
