Trendiy: FAKE SCREEN PRINTING FOR GEO LINES

Get the sophisticated look of screen printing, with less hassle as you fake the technique in this fun DIY by the professionals at TrenDIY.

Screen printing is a great form of art whereby you mostly make use of one colour at a time to paint a surface. It is a bit more complicated than it seems at first as you need to come up with a design, add the design to your screen and then practise making use of the screen before you paint something.

The designs you can create are stunning and when you make use of a layering technique you can take the designs to an even higher level. This is a technique is mostly used on fabric but you can also use it on paper. While it is near impossible to get a great result like screen printing without screen printing itself there is an easy way to ‘fake’ geometric line designs, with some wire and paint.

The pros from TrenDIY made use of washing line as it is quite thick and can easily be straightened. You can also make use of potato stamping for simple patterns or shapes. Cutting a potato in half, carving out a simple pattern and using it as a stamp in the paint to achieve some great results. It is advisable that you test a small sample of paint on a piece of fabric to see whether it washes out or not before you decide to print on your pillow cases.

What you will need:

  • Pillow case(s)
  • Syringe / small paint brush
  • Black paint
  • Plastic bag to put inside the pillow case
  • Cardboard or drop sheet to put underneath the pillowcase for painting
  • Wire / Washing line
  • Extra set of hands
  • Marker / Pencil
  • Ruler

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare your surface – Cover up the table you are painting on using drop sheets or card board. Place the pillow case on the surface and add a plastic bag flat inside the pillow case to protect the paint from staining the back of the case.
  2. Planning – Measure the size of the lines out on the cardboard or surface you will be painting on using a ruler and pencil / marker.

3. Painting – Draw up some of the paint in a syringe and let it run down the side of the wire. Alternatively, a small paint brush can be used. Place the wire ends on the marks that you measured out and slowly place it down on the pillow case. You might need an extra set of hands to assist in dabbing the wire lightly to make sure that the whole surface has paint on.

4. Repeat – Repeat step three until you achieve the desired result and have completed your design. 5. Wait until the paint has dried completely and iron the pillow cases. It is best to wash these items by hand in future.
