The Cape Gallery is excited to announce the arrival of ‘Overberg and Overstrand’, an art exhibition by renowned local artist Roelof Rossouw, that will take place at the gallery from 5 to 17 October 2017.
Roelof studied at the Johannesburg School of Art, gaining a national diploma in art and design. He started painting seriously in 1992 and has since exhibited in South Africa, London, Glasgow, Cheltenham, Glasgow, Galway, Armagh, San Francisco and Miami.
Artist’s Statement: “In March this year we relocated to Betty’s Bay in the Overberg district from Robertson. People were expecting me now to paint scenes of this area, but that was not on the cards at all. Then I started to drive around taking photos for the family album. Slowly I started seeing potential and feeling more inspired. I was very familiar with the Overberg and had painted many landscapes of the wheat fields in the past. It does make a big difference to live close to your reference, I can take early morning and late afternoon drives to gather painting reference.”
“Whenever I set out I always hope for clouds. Not too many clouds of course, just enough for the sun to shine through, creating drama and contrast to land and seascapes. In this exhibition I have tried to make more use of focal points and soft edges, which is something I tend to have ignored in the past. I do believe that a painting should be very different to a photograph. In a photograph everything is captured in clear detail, but in painting only the essential should be presented with feeling and mood. Once again my subject is of the beautiful Cape, that which I see around me.”For more visit The Cape Gallery.
