Create an Inviting Guest Bedroom in 5 Simple Steps

Do you have that one unsightly ‘spare room’ in your house that somehow becomes a storage space for everything that does not belong elsewhere? We all have that space. You know the one where we hide toys, laundry or other items that don’t really have a place in your home. Don’t let this space go to waste! With a little bit of TLC and a simple makeover, you can create a stunning guest bedroom that will be so much more inviting and cosy.

Turn this ‘eyesore’ of a room into a functional space, and who knows, you may actually want guests staying over to enjoy the new space! Now you can do it in five simple steps.

1. Declutter the mess

Clear out the mess of your ‘spare room’ and sort out everything. Invest in adequate storage solutions so that all those piles of toys, clothing and accessories have a new home! Once the room is cleared out, you can actually begin to assess the shape and size of the room, without distraction!

2. Assess the Layout

With a clean palette and decluttered space, you can now assess the layout of the room and decide on a design style to suit your needs. The size and shape of the room will help to determine what sort of furniture and colours will work best in the space. Also consider the functionality of the room. Do you need it to work as a multifunctional area – perhaps invest in a smaller bed and desk combo. Bigger rooms will obviously have more space for larger furniture pieces. 3. Choose a Style and colour

Do you want to create a chic hotel-inspired retreat, or a simple, more minimalistic bedroom environment? Whatever your choice, opt for furniture and colours to suit the style. Remember, smaller rooms work best with lighter colours and patterns – to create an illusion of space and airiness. In bigger rooms, you can splash out on colourful walls and furniture to add visual appeal.

4. Think Practicality and Comfort

You want to create an inviting area in your home where guests can unwind and relax in a comfortable space. Think about the needs of your guests and the different comforts that will be required in a bedroom. As such, choose appropriate light fittings, storage solutions and comfortable bedding (with extra blankets) that your guests will be able to use. Add a colourful throw to the bed and leave a few books or magazines on the dresser for your guests’ enjoyment.

5. Keep it Simple

The nature of a guest bedroom is that it is not in use every day. Keep it simple and avoid filling up the space with unnecessary clutter. The aim is to create a clean, fresh and inviting abode. Don’t overthink the design – choose neutral tones and furniture that will offer timeless appeal in this space.
