Break all the rules with Bohemian chic interior design

Bohemian chic interior design seems to break all the conventional rules of design. It is for people who think outside of the box and who are brave enough to experiment with a combination of furnishings, colours and miss-matched items to achieve a random, busy and eclectic feel in the home. It is a style for travellers and collectors. A place in which they can show off their wares, create intrigue and adorn their rooms with accessories. Here is how to achieve the look in your own home.

Bohemian Colours

There are no rules when it comes to bohemian decorating, yet warm earthy colours are quite common, as are metallics. Think brown, terra cotta, gold and other colours in that family. Jewel tones like saturated purple, fiery orange and electric blue often make appearances in accessories like tapestries and art. The key is to use only warm colours that emit a sense of depth. Decorative Materials

Be sure to mix and match lots of patterns and materials to get the Bohemian look. Layer throws on top of furniture and try hanging tapestries and area rugs on the wall. Texture is key. If you have an empty space, fill it with paintings, pillows and figurines. Fringes are a great addition in any Bohemian space. Also, use natural materials like burlap and sisal and mix them with silk and chenille. The materials should have a slightly worn look (not damaged, but not shiny and new either). The bohemian interiors are full of colourful materials and accessories. Tell a story

Accessories in Bohemian rooms should tell the story of the people who live there. Ornate boxes, vintage bottles, maps, and mismatched china – you name it.  Incorporate some of your favourite travel pieces and ornaments. Patterns, pictures and personal memorabilia are big in Bohemian interiors. For a glamourous look, don’t shy away from ornate gold-framed mirrors and oversized crystal chandeliers – as long as each piece carries significance and tells a story that is personal to the owners.
