Step Inside Philippe Starck’s Maison Heler Metz

Nestled in the heart of Metz’s Amphitheatre district, Maison Heler Metz is the kind of hotel that stops you in your tracks—and makes you question whether you’ve just stepped into a dream. Designed by the legendary Philippe Starck, this surreal statement in steel and storytelling is part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, where brutalist geometry meets 19th-century charm, all perched atop a concrete tower.
Maison Heler is unlike anything Metz—or the hospitality world—has seen before. A vision drawn straight from Starck’s imagination, the hotel stands nine storeys tall, crowned by a traditional Lorraine-style house, seemingly lifted from the past and gently placed atop a modern monolith. It’s an intentional contrast that somehow feels right at home in a city layered with Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau design.
Starck’s Fictional Host, Manfred Heler
At the heart of the hotel’s concept is a fictional figure: Manfred Heler, the imagined protagonist of a whimsical tale written by Starck himself. In the story, Manfred inherits a grand family home, only to find it rising mysteriously into the air—an allegory, perhaps, of memory, loss, and elevation. This fantastical narrative is not just an abstract idea; it forms the conceptual blueprint for every room, corridor, and design detail.
Starck recounts: ‘His house has been extruded, as if a cookie-cutter had arrived from below, sliced off a piece of the earth, and mounted it vertically.’
The Design: A Home in the Sky
Inside, the story continues. Warm woods, textured leathers, earthy terracotta, and soft, tactile finishes lend Maison Heler a deep sense of comfort and nostalgia—balancing the building’s bold exterior with interior soul. It’s design that whispers rather than shouts.
On the ninth floor, guests discover La Maison de Manfred—the hotel’s signature restaurant. Here, sweeping views of Metz accompany a hearty French menu, served with warmth and elegance. Nineteen custom stained-glass windows created by Starck’s daughter, Ara Starck, flood the dining space with vibrant, cathedral-like colour, adding yet another layer to the building’s storybook charm.
Design as Storytelling
Starck’s approach here is not just visual—it’s literary. It’s immersive. Maison Heler Metz is a place where design becomes narrative, and architecture becomes art. It invites guests to step into a fictional world that feels strangely familiar, where every detail carries symbolic weight.
For those who appreciate design that defies convention, Maison Heler Metz is a testament to Starck’s ability to challenge the ordinary and elevate the experience of space into something truly meaningful.
