Marion Fuchs – Making Art.

‘Nope’, Antidote series Mixed media on archival paper

We have known Marion Fuchs for her humorous ‘Antidote series’ featuring women from a bygone era looking important, audacious, flabbergasted or with various other facial expressions with witty, tongue in cheek titles. Her other works we loved were her small ‘Joie de Vivre’ images of people leaping, dancing or celebrating life with bright and festive colors and vivacious scenes. Discover more at Hamilton Gallery

‘Dancing with Sheep’
Oil on canvas, 82cm x 82cm

Dancing with Sheep

A larger painting, part of the Joie de Vivre’ series – is her ‘Dancing with Sheep’. This depicts a joyous girl frolicking with lambs in a field, flower and tree lined hills in the distance. The girl is momentarily care-free, with air beneath her feet and an almost dreamlike quality to the space that surrounds her.

More recent works are as lively and full of ‘fire’, yet with a more serious undertone – although she manages to retain the beauty and verve. Marion has been working on a series titled ‘Man-made Dryas’. The Dryas was a period in the earth’s history of destructive fires, floods and volcanic activity – causing massive extinctions and climate change…

‘ Into the Deep’
Oil on canvas, 60cm x 73cm

“The figures in the paintings are blithely unaware, leaping from fire to flood as if for fun”, explains Fuchs. The paintings Marion has created are both beautiful and devastating – aesthetically uplifting yet with a thought-provoking message. Her series reflects on the catastrophic effect that human activity is having on the earth and its climate.

Diptych

Marion’s Diptych, where the figure in the middle is split over the two canvases – shows separation to emphasize the disconnect between us and our environment.

Marions artistic process is tirelessly expressive and free. She uses paint to create artworks that speak loudly, whether to simply celebrate or to strongly comment. No matter what her subject matter in her paintings, she succeeds in making an impression with her fabulous art-making.
