Hamilton Gallery: Dave Robertson – Transitions
Dave Robertson’s ‘Transition Series’ of over-painted photographs are a fresh and original representation of street life ‘reality’. Robertson has captured moments and daily life in and around Cape Town, adding elements of mystery and surprise using inks, pastels and acrylic paint. The artworks have thus undergone a kind of ‘transition’ to become the end product- original artworks exploring themes of imperfection, receptivity and the need to embrace new perspectives. He has transformed the scenes from the ‘everyday’ into ones that transcend this reality and allow for the possibility that there are, and need to be, alternate realities beyond the one we immediately experience.
The artist allows chance and intuition to guide his application of paint with uninhibited brushwork or expressive smears. The results are images that have a metaphysical feel, inviting the viewer to contemplate crossing a threshold into another world.
These works are small-scale originals (20cm x 15cm), thought-provoking as well as aesthetically pleasing, making them a desirable addition to a home art collection . They would work well as part of a wall collage, or as small signature piece for an interior space.
Although these works are small, their colourful compositions are striking: their message referring to dimensions beyond the here and now: powerful and transcendent.
