Discovery Announces Launch of HGTV

Discovery, the global leader in real life entertainment is launching its popular home and lifestyle network HGTV as a pay-tv channel in South Africa.

Launched on July 15th exclusively with DStv (ch 177), HGTV is the global home of lifestyle with engaging on-screen talent bringing inspiration, expertise and creative flair to every renovation and decoration.

With over 20 years investment in Africa and as part of its continued global content expansion since buying the former Scripps Network brands, Discovery now expands its portfolio to 11 channels – securing its position as the biggest real-life TV entertainment portfolio in Africa.

HGTV celebrates the spirit of home and encourages audiences to view and do; with stories, characters and home transformations that empower fans to design and renovate the homes and gardens they love. HGTV’s international hit shows include titles like Fixer Upper, House Hunters and Flip or Flop.

The launch builds on Discovery’s strategy to increase the reach of HGTV; and engage audiences with dedicated brands that power their passions. As the ultimate destination for home enthusiasts, HGTV creates a powerful opportunity to connect advertisers with female audiences. In the US HGTV has been the #1 network for upscale women aged 25-54 for 12 years running.

“With such phenomenal US and international success, we are confident that South Africans too will relish the best of in real-life home and renovation content,” says Amanda Turnbull, Vice President and GM for Discovery in Africa and the Middle East. “As a global brand, it is important for us that our content transcends borders and inspires a wider audience.”

“We are thrilled that the Discovery group is bringing to DStv homes one of their most loved lifestyle channels. We look forward to seeing our customers enjoy the rich and diverse content on home improvements and inspirational tricks of the trade – available for the first time in this market. HGTV (Home and Garden Television) will be an enrichment of our lifestyle and culture genre which is an eclectic mix of passion, wonder & discovery – giving our valued customers something new to get excited about every day. Being able to bring viewers the best of international content is a key benefit of our partnerships with networks like Discovery and we look forward to seeing our viewers enjoy this special launch,” says Yolisa Phahle, General Entertainment CEO for MultiChoice.

Content on the channel focuses on five pillars of the home: buying and selling, renovation, flipping, home improvement and dream homes, in addition to a library of new, never-before-seen, content that South African audiences will now have access to.

The South African launch follows the successful launch of HGTV in Germany last month, and the announcement that Home will rebrand to HGTV in the UK in 2020.
