Celebrity Designers: Nate Berkus Chats To Kelly Hoppen
If you haven’t figured it out yet, we love all things interiors over here at SA Decor and Design – The Buyer’s Guide. More so, when some of our favourite celebrity designers offer insight into the industry. We couldn’t help but share some of this amazing interview from renowned global designer Nate Berkus as he chats to Kelly Hoppen…
Let’s take a look at what Kelly had to say…
When it comes to decorating “rules”: Is there such a thing and if so, is there one you constantly break?
Rules are made to be broken, I’m always breaking rules. Good design is all about having something new or different – so if you stick to the rules , you’ll never expand your horizons. If somebody says to me “Don’t do this” or “Don’t do that”, it becomes very difficult for me to be creative. But if a client says, “Just be whoever you want, and create” – that’s where the genius happens.
What is the most unexpected thing in your home?
My big Mickey Mouse sculpture! I love him so much, I feel like I want to constantly wheel him around and put him in different places in the house. In fact, I think I will. I might place him in my gallery looking down, it is his birthday coming up, after all.
What does your dream house look like and where would it be?
You mean other than the one I already own? I’ll tell you exactly, it would be in Majorca, by the sea. It HAS to be by the sea; I have to hear the sea, see it, walk along it, smell it, everything! My dream house abroad, which is one that I’m currently designing – in my head. The whole house would be literally creased loose covers, with massive, comfortable seating. It is incredibly basic and that’s probably because the way I live is so organized. The outside has to have an amazing infinity pool with big cabanas, lots of shade and palm trees everywhere, and massive plantation shutters. I want it to be a breeze, I want to walk through the house and for it to feel like you’re inside a breeze.
What’s your signature touch in your home or your personal style?
My design concept is to create timeless and understated elegance whilst fusing the East and the West. Meaning, the Eastern principles of simplicity and the Western taste of sumptuous textures and luxurious finishes. It’s all about grid systems, runners, bands, texture, and metals – not just fabric textures. It’s also about smell, and, of course, layering.
