Designing a Timeless Bathroom: Expert Insights on Creating Calm, Cohesive Spaces
Designing a bathroom today goes beyond layout and specification; it is about creating a space that feels considered, cohesive, and quietly restorative. In conversation with Victorian Bathrooms, designer Natalie Bulwer shares her approach to intentional bathroom design, offering insight into how material, proportion, and restraint come together to shape a space that endures.
How do you begin designing a bathroom from a blank slate?
Every project starts with context. The bathroom should be viewed as part of the wider home, with architecture – whether classical or modern – guiding early decisions. It’s also important to establish whether the space will be a visual feature or something more cohesive and integrated into the overall design language.
What role do surfaces play in setting the tone?
Surfaces define mood. I like to layer textures, pairing polished finishes with natural materials like wood or textured walls. Often, I begin with a key feature, such as a beautifully veined marble, and build the scheme around it.
How do you balance texture without overwhelming the space?
Restraint is key. I usually work with one dominant texture and support it with more subtle finishes. This creates depth without making the space feel busy or over-designed.
Do you design around a centrepiece?
Yes, a strong focal point can anchor the room. It might be a bold wallpaper or a statement bath, like a copper piece. The surrounding elements should then step back to allow that feature to stand out.
What defines a calm, restorative bathroom?
Proportion and balance. The scale of vanities, mirrors, and tiles all contribute to how the space feels. A well-resolved layout supports daily rituals and creates a sense of ease.
How important is cohesion with the rest of the home?
It’s essential. Even with standout features, there should always be a thread – through colour, material, or tone – that connects the bathroom to the wider home.
What makes a bathroom truly luxurious?
Luxury comes from intention. When flow, lighting, and material choices are carefully considered, the result is a space that feels effortless, refined, and inherently comfortable.
