Concrete Reimagined: An Interview with the Founders of The Concrete Corporation
With thirteen years of experience in the concrete industry, The Concrete Corporation has become known for combining nature, design, and cutting-edge technology to produce handcrafted concrete products that challenge convention. We sat down with founder Lumar Fourie and Sales & Operations Manager Rolf Meyer to discuss their philosophy, innovations, and what makes their work so distinctive.
Q: Lumar, how did The Concrete Corporation come to life?
Lumar: I’ve always had a passion for research, development, and design—especially in the context of concrete. Growing up in what you could call a ‘concrete jungle,’ it felt natural to start experimenting with this material. Over time, I started to see the endless possibilities it offered. Eventually, that led to the creation of The Concrete Corporation—born from a desire to push boundaries and bring bold ideas to life.
Q: You mention pushing boundaries. What makes your concrete work stand out?
Lumar: For starters, we use lightweight GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) and UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete), which allow for a much higher tensile strength and versatility than traditional concrete. This means we can produce anything from basins and countertops to 3D wall tiles and cladding—products that wouldn’t be possible with standard methods.
Q: And yet, despite the technology, there’s still a human touch to everything.
Rolf: Absolutely. While we do use advanced tools like 3D design software and CNC machining to assist in mold making, concrete is still very much a hands-on material. Every product is hand cast, shaped, and finished by our team. It’s an intensive process, but it’s what gives each piece its unique character.
Q: How would you describe your design philosophy?
Lumar: We say it often—imperfection is perfection to a beautiful perspective. Concrete has natural flaws and characteristics, and instead of hiding them, we embrace them. That’s the soul of our work. We aim for high-end, quality craftsmanship, and we never stop refining what we do.
Q: Rolf, your background is in cabinetry. How did that lead you into concrete design?
Rolf: Funny enough, the jump wasn’t as big as it seems. Coming from a design and fabrication background in the cabinetry industry, I already had a strong sense of materiality and precision. Concrete offered a new creative outlet. Working with Lumar has been incredible—we get to explore what’s possible with GFRC and UHPC, and we’re constantly evolving.
Q: What does collaboration look like for your team?
Rolf: We work closely with architects, interior designers, and decorators—both in residential and commercial settings. That collaboration, paired with our knowledge of concrete, really allows us to meet their vision. Whether it’s a bespoke basin or a full feature wall, we make sure the end result is something we’re proud to put our name on.
Q: What’s next for The Concrete Corporation?
Lumar: We’re staying rooted in the material, but we’re always moving forward. We’re committed to innovation, refining our techniques, and staying ahead of new technologies in the concrete space. The possibilities are still limitless—and that’s what keeps it exciting.
At The Concrete Corporation, concrete is more than just a building material—it’s a canvas. With a team rooted in passion, precision, and creativity, they continue to reshape how we see concrete in the modern design world.
