Trendiy: New Jacket for an Old Mirror
Upcycle an old mirror with just a coat of paint in your favourite colour and some design inspiration to breathe new life into an old and tired furniture item. TrenDIY shows us just how to do it in this simple DIY you can try at home!
Here an old rattan mirror was dying for a makeover. Some chalk-based paint was all it needed to create a feature item. The wonderful thing about chalk based paint, is its no mess no fuss usability. It is not a chalk board paint – no, it’s not for writing.
It is the emulsion that is chalked and water based. As with most chalk paint brands, it promises to take the iffy out of paint preparation, so no sanding of the surface is required for the paint to adhere to whatever you’re painting. It also doesn’t require an undercoat. True!
Here’s how to get the look:
First, you need a good quality paint. Rust-Oleum Chalked ultra matte paint was chosen from a local TrenDIY store. The colour here is Blush Pink, but you can choose any colour you prefer.
Start by stirring the paint well – not shaking! Then wipe off the dust and grime from your old mirror and mask off the entire mirror area with tape to prevent spills and damage. Next, paint two or three coats of paint on the rattan frame. Use a synthetic paint brush and be sure not to apply too much paint per stroke, as the paint may be quite runny.
Leave to dry and carefully remove the masking tape. It should dry to an ultra matte finish. A suggestion is that the painted item can be distressed with sandpaper to create a unique look – but you may prefer to leave the mirror smooth, with its new trendy pink coat. And voila, your outdated rattan mirror has been transformed!
