Bomax Architects

Based in Cape Town, Bomax Architects is renowned for its sleek, minimalist architectural projects that effortlessly combine crisp, clean lines with organic shapes for the ultimate statement-making homes and offices.

Applying Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s less-is-more approach to each project, the architecture firm has some highly-regarded designs to its name, including House Llundadno in Llandudno, Cape Town, as well as an urban treehouse in the city, FNB’s head office in the Free State, the Takealot premises in Midrand, Gauteng, and many more. Each characterised by its minimalist approach to modern living.

“Bomax is a firm of dedicated and experienced architects pursuing a unique contemporary style of sustainable, minimalist architecture,” says the company.

Founded by Dion Max Walters in 2000, Bomax’s extensive portfolio includes local and international design projects, including commercial buildings, upmarket residential homes, retail interiors and spatial urban designs.

One of their most striking designs is House Llundadno in the Mother City, which is shortlisted in the Residential Architectural Property category at this year’s The Design Et Al International Design and Architecture Awards 2023.

The spectacular home is a composition of bold concrete cast forms, sharp horizontal planes and innovative design solutions.

The architectural firm had to factor in not only their clients’ requests for a minimalist design but also the extreme site conditions.

To do so, they had to create deep, unsupported eaves that could withstand the Cape’s weather conditions without obstructing the ocean views.

To achieve this, Bomax designed a “cantilevered concrete form, meeting both structural requirements and optimising the building’s exposure to sunlight. It tapers to a 50mm leading edge to reduce visual weight and to create a lighter structural load.”

“This lightness of structure has an elegance about it. The way it opens to the energy of the beach below, it’s stunning. It sits in the water; the building appears to float. At the same time, it’s connected with nature,” says Walters of the result.

The winners of The Design Et Al International Design and Architecture Awards 2023 will be announced in September.
