Scandinavian design with an African feel.
Cape Town-based furniture manufacturer, Saks Corner, is well-known for its mid-century Scandi-inspired designs with a local touch.
Apart from crafting beautiful new pieces, owner Dan Saks also loves to breathe new life into old pieces.
He recently completed one such reno on a beautiful vintage chair.
“This year has left me feeling forlorn, worn out and emotionally threadbare. Not dissimilar to this vintage chair,” Dan says.
“But with the sweet, warm taste of summer holidays in the air, there was just enough left in my tank (not diesel) to save this poor excuse for a posterior proper upper.”
Dan started by sanding down and resealing the frame.

Then, he chose a pretty Skinny la Minx fabric to reupholster the seat in (it’s no surprise that Dan favours their fabrics – his furniture pairs perfectly with their retro-inspired fabrics).
“The design is called Flower Ring and is inspired by the growth cycle of a common roadside weed,” Dan says.
“I can just imagine it enduring, surviving and then emerging full bloom for the delight of passing travellers. A lot like our latest makeover!”
After completing his chair, Dan also breathed new life into Skinny la Minx owner, Heather Moore’s most recent find – a vintage 50’s cane chair.
Dan gave it a new paint of coat and fresh upholstery, this time opting for the Flower Ring Pollen fabric from Skinny la Minx.
“The ugly duckling is now a graceful swan,” he says of the renovated piece.
