How to successfully merge your décor after moving in together

When you’re merging two lives into one household and deciding to move in together, this can be a very exciting and challenging time. Now is the time to redefine your relationship and also refine your interior styling to suit both of you. Think about the many furniture options you already own – now consider all of your partner’s furniture that will need to blend together into one new space. Sound daunting? Don’t fret. Hippo.co.za asked us to offer you some of our own top tips to help you successfully combine your décor and styles into a home you will both love.

  1. Think practically

You have a sofa system; he has a sofa system. What to do! Combining the contents of two homes into one always comes with a practical consideration. If you don’t have double the space, but you do now have double the furniture, you may have to get rid of some things. Consider your new space and which furniture items will work best there. It’s time to chat to your partner about your furniture needs. If budget allows, why not go shopping and choose new items that you both love.

2. Identify your must-haves After you have considered your new space and layout, chat to your partner about those must-have items that you will need in your home. Basic appliances and furniture are obviously at the top of the list. However, you may have a favourite piece that you don’t want to part with, such as an heirloom piece or vintage furniture that you’d like to keep. Let your partner know about these and other items with sentimental value and add them to your ‘must-have’ list.

3. Learn to compromise Combining décor and furniture is a tricky task. You may have to confront your partner about their tastes and décor styles. Be gentle and learn to compromise. She may love the boho chic lifestyle while he adores minimalist interiors. You will need to come to a suitable compromise that works for both of you. 4. Upcycle Before splurging on all-new furniture for your new abode, perhaps you can revamp or upcycle some of your old things to suit the space. Reupholster those old chairs to suit both of your tastes; paint an outdated mirror or frame; or change the hardware on some of your dressers. Think practically and consider both of your design styles to upcycle old furniture and give it a new lease on life.

5. Find common ground Without cluttering your new interior with two opposing design styles, chat to your partner about redefining your décor style as a couple. Develop your own style together. After all, your home should be a reflection of each of you.

6. Get the right cover With a new home comes new responsibilities. To avoid unwanted stress when moving into a new place, ensure that you have taken out household insurance to cover you in the event of any mishap. You also need to consider The Legal Implications of Living Together and may want to invest in Life Insurance to protect you or your partner, should anything happen to either of you.   *Hippo Comparative Services (Pty) Ltd is an authorised financial services provider.
