Hoi P’loy Teams Up With Renowned Artist Porky Hefer

Hoi P’loy has teamed up with renowned artist and designer Porky Hefer in a collaboration that sees his well-known lighting designs refined, produced and exclusively sold through the local lighting company.

Inspired by the rapid transformation of the light bulb and the emergence of LED lamps. The shades are masterfully turned in the shape of the old fashioned incandescent bulb, from solid wood and no dyes or stains are used to produce the various colour ways. Instead different woods are used to create the desired colour.

Porky Hefer Lite Bulb Pendants typically feature a wooden lamp shade which is suspended from a 2.5m Hoi P’loy fabric cable cord, and wooden ceiling cup. Each lite contains a 5W LED GU10 bulb.

Hoi P’loy recently completed a large hotel project with interior designers, Source IBA where a special production line was established to supply the large order of customised Porky Hefer “Found Object” pendant lamps. The lamps are based on children’s spinning tops from all around the world with this particular design being inspired by the one Leonardo DiCapprio spun in the movie Inception. The lights were hand crafted in Cape Town, with specialised packaging designed for safe, efficient shipping and installation.

On site, the lamps were attached to the wall using a Gunmetal Grey Hoi P’loy ceiling cup, with black fabric cord exiting the top, and then surface mounted up along the wall and the ceiling with brass cable management to suspend the wooden lamp shade over the bedside tables.

Hoi P’loy prides itself in being a leader in the highest quality, bespoke, locally manufactured lighting products. Partnering with a globally recognised designer such as Porky Hefer is an honour and testament to the fact that South Africa has what it takes to produce truly world-class offerings.

Hefer’s background as a Creative Director in Cape Town and New York advertising agencies, laid the foundation for his creative consultancy, Animal Farm. Intrigued by the reactions and energy a piece can generate, he embraces Africa and the skills that are readily available indigenously, rather than trying to emulate foreign processes. Hefer sees beauty in the functional, the ordinary and discarded.
