Eurolux: What Colour Light Is Best For Your Bedroom?
When choosing bulbs for your bedroom avoid bright white LED bulbs at all costs. This type of bulb emits more blue light than any other type and blue light is detrimental to a good night’s sleep. Blue light is optimal during the day because it boosts your attention span, elevates your mood, and regulates your body’s natural wake and sleep cycle, known as the circadian rhythm. However, when it comes to getting a good night’s rest, this type of light is far from ideal. Blue light suppresses the body’s natural secretion of melatonin which is the chemical responsible for triggering tiredness.
If you’re not suffering terribly from lack of sleep but don’t want the effects of blue light in the evening, then incandescent bulbs are fine. They may not be energy-saving but they give off a nice warm light that is perfect for evenings.
If you take your sleep seriously then red light is your best bet. There is a range of red spectrum bulbs and red-tinted LEDs on the market these days. Not sure if red lighting is for you? You can test this idea out by plugging in red fairy lights before committing to new bulbs.
You can also set yourself up for a good night’s rest by preparing your body for sleep. Gradually make your room darker by dimming the lights as you go about your evening routine. This encourages your body to begin its physiological progression towards sleep. Ceiling fixtures with dimming capabilities will help settle you down for the night. Alternatively, a table lamp with a translucent shade and warm bulb will offer a soft, cosy light and diffuse the glare, helping you to relax and unwind.
