Up Close & Personal With The Urbanative’s New Collections

Following their 2017 collection inspired by Ndebele graphics and motifs juxtaposed with modern design silhouettes, TheUrbanative will be launching their 2nd collection at this year’s Design Joburg inspired by the sculptural lines, forms and textures of historical African hairstyles.

Their new collection is a celebration of the magic of African hair as well as an exploration of the relationship between African hair and identity, pride and beauty. The pallete of this collection is an assortment of multiple shades of natural clay terracottas and ochres inspired by the gorgeous sculptural red locks of the Himba women in northern Namibia and the Hamar women in Ethiopia.

The Collection is a dominated by organic lines and shapes inspired by hairstyles captured in celebrated Nigerian hair series photographic work of the famed J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere.
