Spotlight: Griffiths & Griffiths Heritage Furniture
With an exquisite 2000m2 showroom located in Kramerville, Johannesburg, Griffiths and Griffiths is a family run business and a premier supplier of bespoke furniture in South Africa. Owned and operated by a mother-son duo, Gladys and Peter, the company boasts a long history with over 30 years in business.
We recently had the pleasure to chat with Gladys Griffiths about her family business. We, therefore, bring you some inside info into the manufacturing process of high-end and bespoke classic and heritage furniture.
Here’s what she had to share…
What makes Griffiths and Griffiths Furniture Manufacturing unique?
Griffiths & Griffiths base their designs on well-known designers such as Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton, who were furniture designers from the 17th & 18th centuries. These designs have never changed due to the expert and unique designs being created with perfect proportions from the beginning and unlike modern furniture which changes due to fashion demands. Our furniture has had the perfect proportions from inception.
What is a favourite piece in your collection?
Our Gainsborough chair is a chair that lends itself to many applications from studies to formal lounges.
Who or what inspires you most when coming up with designs?
All our designs are based on the Norman Adam collection which was a wonderful collection built up by Mr Adam who had his famous collection of English antiques displayed in his London shop in Han Road. Sadly, this shop has now closed.
What is the inspiration behind upcoming collections?
We endeavour to stay as close to the original designs as possible in order not to lose the authenticity of the pieces.
What is your favourite part about the manufacturing industry?
Taking a raw item of furniture and turning it into a glamourous statement with beautiful fabric or gilded finish.
What are your suggestions for combining historical furniture with more modern furnishings?
Every home needs one classical piece of furniture to “ground” the space. While modern furniture loses its appeal after a few years, our classical furniture improves with age!
What does a classical piece of furniture add to a space within a home?
A classical piece gives a feeling of elegance and meaning and substance to a room.
What is your advice for new clients investing in a few of your key pieces?
I like to tell clients that any of our furniture pieces are an addition to a home that will give the home a base of stability and timelessness elegance.
How long have you been in Kramerville?
We have been in Kramerville for 30 years. We were the first furniture company to move here from Midrand and subsequently, Kramerville has become the decorating centre of South Africa.
With Covid, how has your business adapted to the new normal?
We have weathered the pandemic like all our colleagues practising safe protocols and carrying on as well as we can!
Tell us more about your latest and upcoming collections?
We will be receiving new items from our American based range and will be launching this in September 2021.
