The East River Chair by Hella Jongerius exhibits the Dutch designer’s signature style through the fusing of industry and craft; high and low tech; traditional and modern. These distinctive characteristics come to life in the small but noble arm chair which features a combination of materials including wood, metal, leather and fabric. The colours of the East River Chair are carefully coordinated. Depending on the selection of colour combinations, the chair boasts a very different look which can range from muted and calm to cheerful and bright. The choice in colours and materials is not a decision based on aesthetics alone: the practical leather covers protect the armrests from dirt and wear, and the thicker padding of the seat cushion, which extends up to the backrest, provides comfortable lumbar support. Thanks to the convenient strap handle on the rear side of the backrest, this compact armchair lends itself to flexible applications. The development of the fashionable East River Chair is based on a chair designed in a 2013 collaboration between Hella Jongerius and Vitra for the North Delegates Lounge at the UN headquarters in New York.
