St Leger & Viney: Lewis and Wood – The New Palampore Print
The inspiration for the new Palampore Prints Collection was drawn entirely from an 18th century Palampore quilt found at the V&A. From this antique textile has emerged a collection of three beautiful fabrics and wallpapers – Palampore, Coromandel and Hindi Rose, which can be viewed online at Lewis and Wood.
A feast of beautifully drawn flowers, fruits and foliage are present in this exclusive design.
The precious piece of workmanship was created on the Coromandel Coast of India using imagery adapted for the European market – and was eventually owned by G.P. Baker who donated it to the V&A the year before he died in 1951.
Where does the name come from?
The word Palampore is a term used for large hangings and bedspreads, derived from a Hindi Persian word ‘palang-gosh’ which means bed-cover.
The end result is a beautiful collection that has been given a new lease on life. You can look forward to a colourful collection inspired by tradition and the remarkable Indian quilt found in the Victoria and Albert Museum archive.
