The Street Store: Pop-up shops for the homeless

South Africa’s innovative pop-up store for the homeless recently re-surfaced via social media and if you haven’t heard about it yet, you ought to find out: a non-profit initiative, otherwise known as The Street Store, was created in collaboration between M&C Saatchi Abel and the Haven Night Shelter in 2014 to encourage wealthier residents to donate items of clothing to the homeless in a safe and interactive public spaces. Once donations have been collected, the Street Store enables the homeless to pick and choose desperately-needed items – without the shame of having to rummage through dust bins in search of shoes and clothing. Since inception, the concept has gone global, over 129 Street Stores have been hosted in public spaces and thousands of homeless people from South Africa and beyond have been clothed. Organisations have come on board including Huffington Post, Good and One; and The Street Store campaign is ever-growing. Click here to apply to host your own.
