Open Design 2016 is excited to welcome everyone’s favourite do it yourself expert Suzelle DIY, aka Julia Anastasopoulos, to lead the Creative Sessions morning on 11 August at Cape Town City Hall, and we at Marcia Loves It absolutely thrive off her fun processes and can’t wait to her talk about her progress since she began. Anastasopoulos, a South African artist, illustrator, designer and actress, became a local internet phenomenon in May 2014, with her do-it-yourself web series known as SuzelleDIY, created along with her partner, Ari Kruger, who is a filmmaker and animator. Her anticipated talk will be among the the company of passionate thought-leaders, community role models and determined changemakers at Open Design Cape Town 2016, which takes place from 10 to 21 August at Cape Town City Hall and across the city. Now in its fourth year, Open Design 2016 is a 12-day citywide festival of talks, exhibitions, workshops, tours, activations and interactive experiences that explore how design links the building blocks of a sustainable, inclusive society: through innovation, community building and education. With over 140 mostly free events on the programme, and collaborations with global and local brands, Open Design 2016 brings design and innovation to life. The Talk100 discussion sessions are a key feature of this year’s Open Design and will cover topics such as:
- ‘What qualities do we need in future business leaders and social entrepreneurs?’ (speakers Karidas Tshintsholo – Executive Director of Moneytree Group, MD of SA Textiles and Ian Calvert – Project Leader at Red Bull Amaphiko);
- Are we ready for the fourth industrial revolution? (speakers Robyn Farah – Founder of KAT-O and TECHTalk, Lars Espeter – game developer and leader of the Game Graphics course at Friends of Design, Alan Ball – drone pilot and founder of Flying Robot);
- What does it take to build a community? (speakers Arianna Mazzeo – Head of Research and Professor of Creative Arts at Bath Spa UK and Innovation Professor at Elisava Design School, Barcelona, India Baird – founder of Rock Girl and Luthando Dyasi – co-founder of Dine with Khayelitsha);
- Is health the new wealth for our cities? (speakers Lufefe Nomjana – Founder and CEO of Espinaca Bakery in Khyaeltisha, also known as the Spinach King, Ryan Robers – founder of Deskstand and Willam Maphma – founder of Vula Mobile).
