Principia Design: American Spaces at Victoria Yards
Situated in the heart of Lorentzville lies Victoria Yards – a hidden gem that has emerged as one of Johannesburg’s trendiest artisanal working spaces.
What was once a derelict industrial space has now been transformed into a beautiful and functional venue, where artists and artisans use the industrial units as studios; and on market days, the units double up as galleries to showcase their beautiful crafts. Victoria Yards presents a uniquely integrated urban complex that places its focus on the upliftment of social development and commercial enterprise.
Principia Design has been involved with a recent project in Victoria Yards, creating a new collaborative workspace for American Spaces and Makers Valley. Drawing from the existing industrial visual aesthetic of the space, the team chose all the fabrics and finishes to suit.
“We also were incredibly lucky to have one of the artists from Victoria Yards on board, who we commissioned to do some paintings of American and South African skylines, which really came out beautifully!”
The rest of the décor items were sourced from other Victoria Yards artisans, all in keeping with the spirit of supporting and uplifting the direct community.
“In the new year, we hope to expand further on this project, involving more artists and artisans with additional design elements we are really excited to implement. It really has been an enormous privilege to be involved in this project and to become more familiar with the tenants and all that Victoria Yards stands for. To have been a part of something so fundamentally forward-thinking has been a true honour and something we will never forget.”
