Design Trends By Frans Alexander Interiors

We chatted to Frans Alexander about the latest trends in the design industry and what elements we should consider in our modern interiors…

Following Intuition

“I personally do not enjoy following trends but rather follow what my intuition tells me and what I feel is relevant to the space and those who will occupy the space.

At the moment, I love a mix of velvets and textures and really like beautiful Italian tiles and real wood floors. Nothing beats the real thing.

Have a look at this beachside apartment where we used Italian tiles on the floor and real marble tiles in a herringbone design in the kitchen.”

Natural Tones and Textures

“We always say that winter is the perfect time to stay indoors or at home, whether cosy on a couch reading a book or with friends having a glass of red wine. It certainly is a time when a warm and inviting home calls to you. I love my home to be natural and I create the warmth by adding knitted throws and texture scatter cushions. I refrain from adding colour instead I rather use natural tones textures and materials to add depth.”

Outdoor Kitchens

“Durban does not really get that cold during winter and it’s always a good time to invest in an outdoor kitchen. What better time than during the winter to build or renovate that outdoor kitchen.

In the photograph below, I used marine ply in matte black with a matte black Meir Tap and the gorgeous Caribbean Italian Tile on the wall that looks like wallpaper. This is now available from Frans Alexander Interiors in various designs and colours.

Comfortable Seating

“A comfy seat in a dressing room always shouts home and luxury. Below ( top right) I used Lizzo Luxurious Velvet from Hertex International and a herringbone mirror inlay behind for that much-needed detail.”

Practical Living

When it comes to your choice of finishes, choose textiles that are durable and complement your lifestyle.

“Frans Alexander used a lovely new fabric with a treatment that guards and protects the fabric from soaking up any spillage. This is great as it helps to keep your home easy to clean, especially when you have pets or small children. Let’s face it, we all want a beautiful home but we certainly don’t want to lose any sleep and fuss over the odd accident. A home needs to be practical and functional.”

Here are some photographs of a lounge and some bedrooms in a neutral palette that is cosy.

All in the Details

“Nowadays it’s more and more about the detail and less about how small or large the space is. That’s when the soul of any space presents itself.”

Frans Alexander Interiors specialize in designing timeless, elegant spaces, offering a full turnkey service and project management of the design, from concept to installation.
