paper space design bring life to a house in the City of Gold

Chris & Claire approached Paper Space Design to help turn their newly built house in Morningside into their new home. The newly built premise is a modern take on traditional architecture, which sits beautifully in contrast to the chaos that is Sandton. Our client had completed building when we started working together to finish the spaces with curtaining, wall finishes, furniture and accessories. Our vision for their home was to create a space full of detail and designer elements that would compliment and accommodate their busy lives and a curious toddler. Another challenge given to us when briefed was that our client was a vegan and an animal rights activist. This in turn forced us to think of using alternative fabrics and staying away from polyester blends and synthetic materials. We focused more on the sustainability of the material in the specification process, which we can easily be taken for granted as interior designers.

When we came up with the initial concept, we were looking for elements that would work cohesively throughout the home. We used pops of colour and raw elements, such as timber and screed to bring a nature flow to each space. The open plan kitchen, dinning room and lounge brings along an airy and bright feel, as there are no obstructions in bringing in natural sun light and the sliding doors onto the patio create the illusion of more space.
We created a clean, fresh and modern space that would reflect the couple’s personalities. The aim was to use materials that would flow and move naturally & decided to use linen and cotton based fabrics, as well as fabrics that were locally manufactured and inspired. We also sourced local pendant light fittings that we suspended above the dining room table. Positioned alongside the dinning room table we placed a children’s table and black board decal for their two-year-old son to sit and play. We loved this couples emphasis on family and incorporating their son into their interior design choices, therefore making their house a truly beautiful family home that they can enjoy in years to come. This is an ongoing project that we are thrilled to be apart of. Written By: Alexandra Power of Paper Space Design Contact: Paper Space Design
