Libby House: A Project by Alan Walt Architect

A house with sweeping sea and mountain views situated in Camps Bay, Cape Town. This is Libby House, a home beautifully constructed by Alan Walt Architect and Associates for a London-based interior designer Libby Jacobs of  LA.ID Interior Design Studio now living in Cape Town.

The site was situated on a very busy road in Camps Bay and the lateral and rear neighbours, one being a block of apartments, were overlooking. The brief was to design a double storey four bedroom home with large entertainment spaces and minimal circulation.

The selected palette of finishes focussed on some industrial elements such as face brick, off shutter concrete, steel and plaster and paint in various combinations. Windows were arranged in response to specific views of the mountain, carefully avoiding the neighbours and controlling light, save for the sea views which contain large openings.

A relatively wind free outdoor area and garden were strategically placed facing the sea/mountain.

A first floor pyjama lounge serves as a secure informal living area and acts as circulation. On the first storey, the building overhangs the ground floor on the sea side in order to provide shading and create outdoor social spaces.

The client brought a European sensitivity and playful sophistication in their choice of furnishings and wallpapers, all locally sourced as well as an excellent collection of young local art.

Says the client: “Having lived in this home now for 2 years we can confidently say that we feel lucky to come through the front door every day. In working with Alan Walt architects we were able to achieve an open plan living that is comfortable, allowing for a seamless outdoor-indoor lifestyle. Implementing very thoughtful child friendly finishes, as well as extra little details, for example, the location of the playroom next to our kitchen, a fridge in the pyjama lounge, ensures that we use every room in our house. The clever design of the separate Annex apartment has brought in extra income and still allows for integration when family visits from overseas. Externally, the brick faced along with concrete driveway which is uncommon in this area has given the home a platform to stand out subtly which is exactly what we wanted to achieve. It’s a silent unexpected beauty, whose design has led this home to be chosen for several high-end advertising campaigns.”

Alan Walt has had a long-standing relationship with Midas Paints and is often drawn to the versatility of colours and sheer quality of the paints in their new builds and constructions.
