Decor and Design Spotlight: Amy Mitchell

Marcia Margolius and Robert Tompson present Decorex Spotlight. In these posts, industry greats are asked a series of questions about their imprint on the industry. Amy Mitchell has always been interested in all design genres, over time what has felt more and more true to her is to embrace nature. She aims to create thoughtful and liveable spaces with her main focus on creating a lifestyle for living, with truly comfortable, classic and contemporary pieces. SA Decor: What is your signature style? Amy: I aim to create simple stylish luxury living tailored to suit each client individually –  using a mix of both classic, contemporary and organic pieces. SA Decor: Where do you find inspiration? Amy: I find inspiration in nature and from the places I visit and travel to. As Paul Smith once said, “there is inspiration in everything, if you can’t see it – look again.”  I like to visit all the design and decor trade shows and especially look forward to the international Milan design show for inspiration on current trends. SA Decor: What does a successful project mean to you? Amy: A successful job means a happy client, when I have created thoughtful and liveable spaces that the client loves. SA Decor: If you had to give one piece of design advice what would that be? Amy: Try to buy the best quality items you can afford , whether it be furniture or feature lighting- it will last longer and have more of an authentic feel in your home. SA Decor: What inspired you to go into your design profession? Amy: I would spend countless hours studying interior design magazines and constantly move furniture around my house – eventually an opportunity arose for me to change my career path and with a need for a creative outlet, my career into interior design began. SA Decor: Your Top 5 favourite Pieces of Robert Amy: I’m a fan of the classic pieces he stocks- the tulip table and chairs, the Eames armchair, all the Tom Dixon lighting, the Cherner chairs are a real classic and the Hans Werner wishbone chair is really beautiful.
