Luxury African design brand launches

A new luxury African design brand will make its debut at Design Indaba 2014… Say hello to Halsted! This exciting new brand is manufactured in South Africa and is a collaboration between Fleur Heyns, entrepreneur and impact investor based in London and Fée Halsted, founder of internationally acclaimed Ardmore Ceramic Art, and a recognised leader in creating design products and artworks rooted in Africa. The fantastic duo are supported by a team that includes Ardmore managing director Jonathan Berning, bringing expertise in manufacturing this new design brand.

With Fée having nearly three decades of experience in turning Ardmore Ceramic Art into “modern day collectables,” the first art and design collection to emerge from Halsted is in close collaboration with the internationally acclaimed studio. The first homeware range from Halsted is inspired by Wonderboy Nxumalo, the late artist whose work helped define Ardmore Ceramic Art since 1994 until his death. “When Fleur and I began working on creating a luxury African design brand based on our shared vision, we didn’t hesitate in selecting Wonderboy’s art as the inspiration for our first range,” explains Fée. Wonderboy gained a fantastic following for his unique ability and creative talent, incorporating his love of words onto images that appeared on Ardmore Ceramic Art plates, platters and cups.
In 2012, Ardmore Ceramic Art worked with Mavromac to transfer Wonderboy’s playful, designs onto fabric. This, with the popularity of Ardmore Ceramics globally, triggered the creation of a new company altogether.  With vision to make the transition from art into design, Halsted was born! The Ardmore Collection by Wonderboy, is Halsted’s first collection and proudly takes Wonderboy’s artistic vision a step further. Using hares, flowers, skulls, praying and weightlifting monkeys printed onto hand-woven cotton in bright colours, they have created a unique homeware range, including cushions, tablecloths, throws and pouffs. “This is just the beginning of what we envisage to be a long association with African artists and art projects to create inspiring collections, responsibly made,” Says Fleur.
The Halsted Company’s Ardmore Collection Don’t miss them at the Design Indaba!
