Golden Vetkoek

mmmm…. This Golden Vetkoek recipe is making me lick my lips! A proudly South African treat, these are a delicious alternative to bread and can be eaten as a savoury dish, served with a beef mince, or as a sweet treat with Illovo golden syrup or apricot jam and a cup of coffee! If you want to be adventurous you can even cook your Vetkoek on the braai, for that extra South African flavour! Enjoy!

Ingredients 240g cake flour (500ml) 10ml baking powder 2ml salt 2 large eggs 30ml Illovo Traditional Syrup 250ml milk Sunflower oil for deep frying


  1. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together into a mixing bowl
  2. Beat eggs, syrup and milk together, and pour into dry ingredients, mixing to a lump free batter.
  3. Carefully spoon large balls of dough into hot oil and fry in batches until dark golden all over. Do not be in a hurry – rather keep oil on moderate heat and cook for longer to ensure centres get cooked through.
  4. Drain vetkoek on paper towel and serve freshly-made. Split and spread with margarine and Illovo Syrup of your choice, or fill with savoury fillings for lunchbox treats.
