Basotho Tribal Blankets- History and Fashion

We are all for a bit of History infused with Fashion as it fascinates us and takes us into a whole different understanding of our countries heritage and what has inspired designers throughout the years. The history behind the Basotho wearing blanket goes as far back to the 1860’s when a blanket from Europe was presented to the founder of the Basotho Kingdom of Lesotho, King Moshoeshoe. The blanket was deemed perfection for the cold climate and brought about a whole new realm of comfort to their kingdom. The blanket becoming so popular and its concept having been passed down from generation to generation, reached us now in 2013 through SHNU, Cape Towns very own District 1 inspired shop. The colours that have been incorporated into each and every blanket are so unique in textile design and have a meaning behind each one.

What we love: SHNU’s social responsibility: A royalty from each of these woolen blankets is given to the Lesotho Kingdom and its people. The store aims to promote cultural dialogue not have just this western language in living & fashion but also in the products we buy,  the lifestyle we choose that there is African ways of being, wearing  and living that are so strong on the street, the rural  and in the country. It is special to use an African cultural piece that is traditional , fun  affirming our sense of place.  SHNU is linked to the District 1 storytelling initiative. shnu-blankets
