Spotlight: Meet Ronel Jordaan
The Ronel Jordaan label is harmonious and inspired by nature. This proudly South African brand uses eco-friendly processes in the creation of beautiful textiles turned into unique home decor and interior soft furnishings. We hear from the owner, Ronel Jordaan about the brand and her personal journey in the creative industry.
How did this brand first start?
Time flies I established the company in 2003 by training a handful of women in the art of felt making. What started out as an art therapy session for children and women in 2002 during training as an art therapist, soon turned into a new venture of skills training. We went on to create fashion items and interior soft furnishings.
What did you study to give you the skills to do what you do?
I started studying Drama at the University of Pretoria, but soon turned my attention to textiles and left the University to do an apprenticeship in a textile factory. I absolutely loved it. I soon became a textile designer for the company and textiles have been my passion since.
After having been in business for eight years I had the opportunity to receive a sponsorship from GoldmanSacks and GIBS business school to do a course in entrepreneurship. This was vital for me to focus and grow the business.
Any exciting projects or collaborations you have been involved in?
I have had fantastic opportunities to collaborate with international artists and designers and have exhibited at MUDAC -Museum of Design, Lausanne, Switzerland, The Noguchi Museum NY, and many other galleries. I’ve collaborated with the Haasbrothers, Porkey Hefer, Dr & Misses, Southern Guild, Li Edelkoort, the V&A Waterfront and a few designers from Mali, Senegal, and Ghana.
