In his own words: Master craft artist Joe Govt

A passion for art and craftmanship has resulted in a truly remarkable story of a man with many talents. We spoke to Joe Govo about his journey through design and his personal highlights over the past year…

  1. Briefly tell us about yourself and Joe Govo Ceramics

My name is Joseph “Joe” Govo and I was born in Zimbabwe. I do designs on ceramics which my team and I hand-make as well as hand-paint. I have been living in South Africa for over 10 years and am proud to say that I have now developed a proudly South African business. I grew up in a family of self-taught artists. I watched my uncles do some paintings which I believe played an important role in my life and encouraged me to be where I am today. Designing has become part and parcel of my daily life. I have worked with a lot of other artists who have designed their own ceramic ranges and by working with them, my own products have gained diversity.

My inspiration comes from wildlife, nature and fellow humans beings. I love life, I love celebrating life as well as raising awareness of the beauty and fragile nature of our region through my designs. Africeramix (old trading name) was formed in 2006. A proudly South African business concept that embraces PASSION, CREATIVITY and HUMAN DEVELOPMENT.  Joe Govo designs are unique products for interior designers, tourists, lodges and hotels. We also cater for individuals who wish to own beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces.

  1. What were some of your 2016 highlights?

My 2016 highlight was when I was awarded the opportunity to showcase my designs at the Decorex expo which was held at Gallagher Estate. It was an amazing opportunity for me to represent my brand and proved to be a valuable experience platform for me.My business has evolved enormously both in confidence and revenue, through a very strong relationship and associated support from the team at the Riversands Incubation Hub.

  1. What are some of your most memorable achievements?

My most memorable achievement, was when I was given an opportunity to craft THE CITIZENSHIP RANGE for a ceramic factory in 2012 which was conceptualised by Rial Visage. The citizenship range was also featured on the cover of the September Home Owner magazine in 2013. My other memorable achievement was winning the Paradigm Shift Entrepreneur of the year in 2013.

  1. How would you describe your design style?

My design style and range is forever changing. I am inspired by creative ideas from fellow artists and my customers. My love for our wonderful range of African flora and fauna has the strongest influence over our production though.

  1. What does the year 2017 hold for Joe Govo Ceramics?

Joe Govo Ceramics has just been re-branded and refreshed. I am looking forward to introducing more inspired designs and products to add to our exsiting range and increasing my customer base. I would also like to create more opportunities for passionate artists and continue to grow my team. My dream is for Joe Govo Ceramics to become a well-known international brand.
