Spotlight: Monique Vee Bridges The Design Gap

September 11, 2017

We love innovation in design and this phrase adequately sums up the amazing talent which is Monique Vee. As a young interior designer, Monique is best known for her debut series of furniture entitled ‘Suspension’ which bridges the gap between large scale engineering structures and the everyday household object.

Cited as one of South Africa’s top 10 creatives to look out for, Monique has a keen eye on designer trends and continues to make waves in the local industry. Her Johannesburg studio provides bold spatial design and furnishing solutions to private, commercial, retail and hospitality clients.

Suspension was launched in March 2017 at Design Indaba as part of the Emerging Creatives programme and continues to garner industry attention. The acclaimed collection applies a system of tension to support various surfaces between the floor and ceiling, in order to create the tables, chairs, and benches that we ordinarily utilise.

The result is the only furniture series of its kind and a departure from the arrangement for objects that have long supported our daily functions. It is a commentary on engineering, design and art alike. Each piece borrows its name from a Suspension bridge and is locally engineered and crafted by specialised artisans.

Suspension has been exhibited in Johannesburg and pieces will be installed in the HQ of Vienna Design week between the 29th September and 8th October this year, curated by United Colours of Design.

The finished furniture article is tested before being shipped ready for simple installation. Suspension lends itself to an array of material and finishing options and bespoke orders can be placed through the studio. The 2017 range is available in oak or steel of any colour as standard.

Monique’s eponymous studio continues to provide clients and users with progressive alternatives in order to enhance our daily interactions with our environments. Monique applies an instinctual flair in conceiving and managing each interior design and furniture brief, the result of which is embodied by a confident simplicity and minimal style.

The collection is currently available for purchase online via www.moniquevee.com.
